Cyclocross is the sport of mountain biking in the winter and over obstacles. Cyclocross biking is more challenging, keeps you in shape for summer biking, and is far better than sitting indoors. This site intends to bring people together and provide information about the sport. Please send contributions to admin@cyclocross.com |

Cyclocross TiresThe cyclocross tires have different styles. Some look like files and are relatively flat and others are knobby. The style you use depends on what tire you may choose. They cyclocross tire is not the same as a mountain bike tire. Cyclocross tires roll more smoothly, are lighter in weight, and have less pronounced knobbies. In other words, cyclocross tires are faster than mountain bike tires. File Tread TiresThe file type tires are good in most things, but mud. They can even be used in ice and snow, but knobbies or small round are probably better for that.Round Knob TiresIf you only get one kind of tire, the round treads are probably the best all around tire. It can handle mud, sleet, hail, snow, sand, dirt, and anything else.Mud TiresMud tires throw off the excess dirt quickly. You can tell a mud tire from others because the rounds are smaller and they go up the sidewall further. Mud tires aren't suited for deep mud, but can increase the overall speed of a rider in light mud because they shed the mud so quickly.Tire ChoicePeople all too often underestimate the power of the tire. The tires make a huge difference in the bike. Just like driving a car, the tires affect handling, acceleration, durability, and top speed. Do you want a tough tire that lasts and provides speed? Many racers think the tires are more important than frame selection and other criteria that racers agonize about and other riders think that the most important thing is the frame. The truth is that the tires matter the most so make a careful selection. |
